Introduction

Vatavaran (www.vatavaran.org) has been a strictly not-for-profit, voluntary, community based, active, participatory organization for holistic, ecological and social betterment of the world around us; a hands on, small and ‘determined to make a difference’ organization.

Our Achievements

  • Declaration of Delhi Ridge as a reserve forest, clearing of the encroachments including CRPF Camp.
  • Greening the Ridge with the help of thousands of students of Delhi, hundreds of Jawans of CRPF and forest department.
  • Greening of public places started with indigenous tree species. Golf courses stopped the use of chemicals and became "GREEN".
  • Upgrading of Blood banks.
  • Shift of slaughter houses out of the city boundary.
  • Ban on Animal experiments for cosmetics.
  • Zoos became animal friendly.
  • Ban on use of single use plastics.

Our Firsts

  • Organization by the volunteers-
Earnest and passionate volunteers have been like a stream, never permanent but coming always. Training provided to the young thus fresh flow of ideas continued at Vatavaran.
  • Vatavaran Monkey Work –
A path followed by a series of cross media interventions and events to design a monkey sanctuary.
  • Canine Positives-
Innovated a de-centralized, replicable, practical, low cost, community-based stray dog management system.
  • Zero Garbage Zones-
Since 1991 Vatavaran pioneered de-centralized garbage management. Model replicated in over 30 residential colonies, 15 educational institutions, army mess, shooting range, 3 villages (rural and urban) & multi-national companies
  • Source Treatment System-
Innovated economical and earth friendly hospital waste management system in which any chance of pilfering hospital waste (the biggest problem in India) gets eliminated.
